Concrete Condition testing and concrete repairs

HTS, the UKAS accredited testing division of Topbond plc, undertook a concrete condition survey of a precast structure on the Uskmouth electrical substation.  The testing included chlorides sampling and testing, carbonation testing, measurement of cover and half-cell potential together with logging of defects.  A report, together with a repair specifications and budget costs for the works was prepared and submitted to the client.

The precast structures were 40 years old and the site operator wanted to extend the operational life of the structure by a further 40 years.

Topbond were later instructed to proceed with the repairs identified in the report.  The repair team, who are IPAF trained, worked from a mobile elevated working platform (MEWP) to remove the loose concrete which was caused by low cover to the steel reinforcement. The exposed reinforcement was then cleaned of surface corrosion and coated with a primer.  Following this the substrate was prepared and primed before the repair mortar was applied.
