EREWASH BRIDGE

OVERVIEW

OVERVIEW

HTS was commissioned to undertake concrete testing to the west abutments of Erewash bridge which had limited access. Testing of the east abutment, which had good access, had previously been undertaken by us.

THE CHALLENGE

There was no vehicular access to the west abutment and only a very narrow path at the top of the riverbank, in front of the abutment.  The client was considering accessing the abutment from either an underbridge or scaffolding built in front of the abutment, both of which would have required lane closures of the supported road over.

THE SOLUTION

Our solution was to work from the wider access track in front of the eastern abutment. The ground in front of this abutment was wide enough for a Mobile Elevated Working Platform to be positioned and manoeuvred.  The MEWP was large enough to span over the river and provide access to the full abutment. The saving in traffic management costs and disruption meant Topbond's solution was the most economically advantageous tender.
