Link Bridge Replacement Scheme
The existing access bridge leading to the administration building at Armley Prison, Leeds had reached the end of its working life. Following a competitive tendering procedure, Topbond were appointed to remove the existing link bridge and replace it.
The scope of works for the replacement of the link bridge included provision of high visibility nosing and tactile flooring to the top and bottom of the flight of steps. In addition hand rails complying to the Disability Discrimination Act were installed together with a chair lift. To allow the new link bridge to connect to the adjacent road the fencing was realigned and the surfacing was re-graded to suit adjacent levels and falls.
To minimise noise to the occupants of the office during the removal of the existing link bridge, Topbond elected to cut the existing link bridge into 2 parts and lift them out by crane, placing them directly into a skip for recycling off site.
The contract period for the whole works was very tight, to suit the client's programme. To achieve this programme Topbond took advantage of its in-house precast capability and manufactured the stairs and landing off site. This phase of the works was able to run concurrently with the site preparation and installation of the stringers, thus allowing the tight programme to be met.
