In recent years the Topbond Group have established an excellent working relationship with Milton Keynes Council, so were delighted to be asked to tender for the design and erection of a footbridge across the Grand Union Canal at New Bradwell, Milton Keynes.
Initially a timber structure was required for aesthetic reasons, but value engineering resulted in a composite steel and timber structure, supported by tie bars and a steel tower, the overall span of the structure being 38m.
Ekki was proposed as the preferred material due to its durability and appearance. The steel frame of the deck was clad with timber panels, with the parapet and grooved deck planks solely in timber.
The contract involved Intaspan providing a full package to indclude design and installation of piled foundations and earthwork approach ramps, sheet piling to a 50m length of the Grand Union Canal; design manufacture and subsequent erection of the cable stayed structure - including the tensioning of the tie bars.
