Intaspan was approached by Portsmouth City Council to provide a full design and build package for construction of a 32m long footbridge over the moat next to Hilsea Lido. The package included the concrete foundations.
Construction commenced in late summer 2002 and installation was completed later in the year.
In the competition for design alternatives, Intaspan’s triadetic truss design was successful. This provided the best solution to the aesthetic demands of the site and cost restrictions.
As a key leisure location for the visiting public, elegant detailing was important to the client. The handrail design feature incorporated curved steel posts carrying stainless steel tension cables, finished with a timber handrail. Softwood timber decking was chosen to complement the surrounding landscaping. Our client has received admiration and local support for the elegant functionality and ambient presence of the completed structure.
