Churchfield School was constructed in the 1960’s and featured a projecting reinforced concrete bay window at first floor level. A structural inspection of the bay window revealed that it was inadequate and so the council decided it should be removed. The school windows are made of steel and planning requirements meant that the new replacement window should match the existing. The original manufacturer of the windows was commissioned to specially manufacture a steel window to suit the style of the original window.
HTS devised a temporary structure to support the projecting concrete canopy and then proceeded to cut off sections of the canopy which were lifted to ground level by a 25 tonne crane. All evidence of the projecting bay window was broken out and the concrete columns were finished with a smooth profile to match the adjacent. The window was temporarily sealed until the new steel window was delivered, which was then installed by HTS over a weekend.
At the same time HTS undertook a scheme of concrete repairs and anticarbonation coating work to the concrete beams and columns. Due to the school layout HTS used a variety of access types (including scaffolding, mobile elevated working platforms and scissor lifts which HTS staff are trained to operate) to carry out this work. A temporary screening system was installed to allow the work to be safely undertaken during the normal school week.
