In 1820 King George IV embarked with the Royal Squadron from Ramsgate on his way to Hanover. In recognition of the hospitality he received he decreed that Ramsgate should be allowed to call their harbour ‘Royal’ - an honour unique in mainland Britain. The Victorian Royal Parade, close to the harbour, is a road rising up from the harbour, with marine related businesses operating in the arches under the Parade. The Parade is flanked by balusters, which have over the years suffered lost some of their Victorian splendour. Broadmead Renaissance Cast Stone have been awarded the contract to renew the balusters. There are a total of 1230 balusters and 134 pier pieces but the works will be completed in 4 phases. Phase 1 involves the casting and fixing of 672 balusters and the works are due to be completed in July.
