This brick arch canal bridge required serious attention following the collapse into the Grand Union Canal of a large section of previously applied sprayed concrete.

This revealed exposed brickwork in a severely poor state and the potential for further imminent collapse.

Topbond carried out the repairs to the client’s in-house design. This required removal of unattached existing concrete, stitch repairs to cracked and failing brickwork then concrete spraying over a steel mesh.

The design included installing drainage pipes running through the repair and butting the brickwork underneath. Additionally, an HDPE plastic fender was fitted along the water level side opposite the walkway.

The work was completed over two weeks working from a motorised steel pontoon. This allowed canal traffic to pass by temporarily suspending works.
