This brick retaining wall required remedial repairs for which MouchelParkman, Essex County Council’s consulting engineers, proposed plastic piling rather than brickwork repairs, following approval by the Environment Agency.

Topbond were awarded the installation work as subcontractor by May Gurney Highways under their Term Maintenance Contract with Essex

First, a steel mesh was fixed 50mm off the existing brickwork then the plastic piling was placed and supported with temporary formwork. After the poured concrete had set the sheet piles were permanently resin-fixed with anchor bolts through and behind the existing wall.

The plastic piling method has several advantages in these situations, in particular reduced cost compared with remedial brickwork repairs and visual appearance (the material is corrosion-proof ). Topbond have carried out several other similar installations in Essex.
