Dutton Horse Bridge
45m long footbridge over River Weaver
Footbridge specialists Intaspan recently installed a footbridge over the River Weaver in Runcorn Cheshire.
The bridge was a simple steel warren truss bridge consisting of 3 No. 15m spans, with associated ramps.
However, what made the project challenging was the severely limited access to the site. The location of the bridge was along a narrow towpath restricted to vehicles under 7.5 tonnes.
For this reason the bridge was fabricated in component parts with each truss as a separate welded item. The spans were then assembled down river and loaded onto pontoons for transportation to the site, where they were installed using a floating crane.
A concrete deck was cast in situ, supported on permanent GRP formwork, so the whole bridge acts compositely to carry vehicular loading up to 7.5 tonnes.
